Development of a Benzalkonium Chloride Based Antibacterial Paper for Health and Food Applications

Pathogenic bacteria and other microorganisms pose a potent threat to humans by causing various infectious diseases. To control the spread of infection, different antibacterial products have been developed. However, most them are known be associated with health hazards, environmental pollution, complex fabrication, and/or higher cost. address these issues, in this study, low cost, biodegradable human skin compatible paper has A quaternary ammonium compound, benzalkonium chloride (BKC) used for surface treatment. The concentration aqueous solution BKC coated on was varied from 0.1 wt% 0.2 wt%. No external binder required coating onto paper. efficacy investigated against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 Escherichia coli 8739 bacterial strains. This is highly effective both strains concentrations being within allowable limit cytotoxic effects. optimum can considered as 0.15 wt%, nearly 100% inhibition achieved it developed suitable industry disinfection food packaging purposes, also public hand sanitization.
